The CBSE Class 11 Biology syllabus for the 2024-25 academic year is structured into five key units, each focusing on different aspects of biology:
I. Diversity of Living Organisms (15 marks)
- Chapter 1: The Living World
- Introduction to biodiversity, the need for classification, the three domains of life, taxonomy, systematics, species concept, and binomial nomenclature.
- Chapter 2: Biological Classification
- Study of the five-kingdom classification system, features and classification of Monera, Protista, and Fungi, lichens, viruses, and viroids.
- Chapter 3: Plant Kingdom
- Classification of plants, characteristics of algae, bryophytes, pteridophytes, and gymnosperms (excluding angiosperms), plant life cycle, and alternation of generations.
- Chapter 4: Animal Kingdom
- Features and classification of animals, non-chordates up to phylum level, and chordates up to class level.
II. Structural Organisation in Animals and Plants (10 marks)
- Chapter 5: Morphology of Flowering Plants
- Study of the morphology of roots, stems, leaves, inflorescence, flowers, fruits, and seeds, with a description of the Solanaceae family.
- Chapter 6: Anatomy of Flowering Plants
- Anatomy and functions of tissue systems in dicots and monocots.
- Chapter 7: Structural Organisation in Animals
- Morphology, anatomy, and functions of digestive, circulatory, respiratory, nervous, and reproductive systems in frogs.
III. Cell: Structure and Function (15 marks)
- Chapter 8: Cell – The Unit of Life
- Cell theory, prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, plant and animal cells, cell envelope, cell membrane, cell wall, organelles (structure and function), endomembrane system, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi bodies, lysosomes, vacuoles, mitochondria, ribosomes, plastids, microbodies, cytoskeleton, cilia, flagella, centrioles, and nucleus.
- Chapter 9: Biomolecules
- Chemical constituents of living cells, structure and function of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids, enzymes (types, properties, enzyme action).
- Chapter 10: Cell Cycle and Cell Division
- Cell cycle, mitosis, meiosis, and their significance.
IV. Plant Physiology (12 marks)
- Chapter 13: Photosynthesis in Higher Plants
- Photosynthesis as a means of autotrophic nutrition, site of photosynthesis, pigments involved, photochemical and biosynthetic phases, cyclic and non-cyclic photophosphorylation, chemiosmotic hypothesis, photorespiration, C3 and C4 pathways, factors affecting photosynthesis.
- Chapter 14: Respiration in Plants
- Exchange of gases, cellular respiration (glycolysis, fermentation, TCA cycle, electron transport system), energy relations, respiratory quotient.
- Chapter 15: Plant Growth and Development
- Seed germination, phases of plant growth, conditions of growth, differentiation, dedifferentiation, redifferentiation, growth regulators (auxin, gibberellin, cytokinin, ethylene, ABA).
V. Human Physiology (18 marks)
- Chapter 16: Digestion and Absorption
- Human digestive system, digestion, absorption, and assimilation.
- Chapter 17: Breathing and Exchange of Gases
- Human respiratory system, mechanism of breathing, exchange of gases, transport of gases, regulation of respiration.
- Chapter 18: Body Fluids and Circulation
- Human circulatory system, blood, lymph, heart, blood vessels, cardiac cycle, cardiac output, regulation of cardiac activity.
- Chapter 19: Excretory Products and Their Elimination
- Human excretory system, structure and function of kidneys, urine formation, regulation of kidney function, osmoregulation.
- Chapter 20: Locomotion and Movement
- Human skeletal system, structure and function of bones and joints, muscle contraction, types of muscles, locomotion.
- Chapter 21: Neural Control and Coordination
- Human nervous system, structure and function of neurons, central nervous system, peripheral nervous system, reflex action, sense organs.
- Chapter 22: Chemical Coordination and Integration
- Human endocrine system, hormones, mechanisms of hormone action, regulation of endocrine activity.
