The practical examination is divided into the following components:
- Experiments: 15 Marks
- Spotting: 7 Marks
- Viva Voce: 3 Marks
- Practical Record and Project Work: 5 Marks
List of Experiments
A. Core Experiments
Students must perform the following experiments in the laboratory:
- Preparation and Study of a T.S. of a Dicot and Monocot Root/Stem
- Observation of vascular bundles and tissue differentiation under the microscope.
- Study of Osmosis by Potato Osmometer
- Demonstrating the movement of water through a semipermeable membrane.
- Study of Plasmolysis in Onion Peel Cells
- Understanding the effect of hypertonic solutions on plant cells.
- Study of DNA Isolation
- Extracting DNA from plant materials like spinach, banana, or papaya.
- Study of Mendelian Inheritance Using Pea Seeds or Colored Beads
- Demonstrating inheritance patterns based on Mendel’s laws.
- Study the Effect of Enzyme Action
- Testing the action of salivary amylase on starch under various pH and temperature conditions.
- Study of Prepared Slides
- Permanent slides of mitosis (onion root tip) and meiosis (grasshopper testis).
- Study of a Plant Population Density
- Using quadrat methods to calculate density and frequency.
- Study of Water Pollution
- Testing water samples for pH, clarity, and microbial presence.
- Study of Soil pH and Water-Holding Capacity
- Testing soil from different areas and recording observations.

Spotting
- Identify and Comment on the Following:
- Pollen germination on a slide.
- Mendelian inheritance in pea seeds (wrinkled, round, green, yellow).
- T.S. of the ovary to identify types of placentation.
- T.S. of the blastula through permanent slides.
- Prepared slide of fungi (e.g., Rhizopus) or algae (e.g., Spirogyra).
- Models/Specimens to be Identified and Commented Upon:
- Cockroach – digestive and respiratory systems.
- Identification of the human skeleton (bones and joints).
- Adaptive features in animals (e.g., camel, fish) and plants (e.g., xerophytes, hydrophytes).
Project Work (5 Marks)
Each student is required to undertake one investigatory project related to Biology. Examples of topics include:
- Effect of fertilizers on plant growth.
- Study of microbial growth in various environments.
- Effects of pollution on seed germination.
- Study of drug resistance in bacteria.
Evaluation
Students are evaluated on the following:
- Proper execution of experiments.
- Accuracy in observation and inference.
- Understanding of theoretical principles behind practicals.
- Neat and complete practical records.
